What is HI Vis Made From?

High visibility clothing, or hi vis clothing, is special clothing that ensures the wearer is highly visible when wearing it. In settings where there is low light, or on busy work sites, being easily spotted is important for being seen and staying safe. Whether you are wearing a hi vis jacket or a hi vis vest, the fluorescent colour and highly reflective strips, required by industry standards on high visibility clothing, make individuals stand out against most backgrounds.

As a vital piece of personal protective equipment, or PPE, for workers across many industries being aware of the safety standards of hi vis clothing is essential for many employers.

What are hi vis jackets made from?

The materials used to make hi vis jackets, hi vis vests and other hi vis clothing are similar to most clothing and mainly consist of nylon, polyester and cotton. Synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester have insulative properties which make hi vis hoodies, jackets and sweatshirts cosy and warm when worn outdoors or in draughty spaces.

The textiles used undergo a special dying process to make them fluorescent and comply with safety regulations. Polyester is the main fabric used for hi vis apparel as it holds fluorescent dye well, doesn’t pill or cause bobbles and has strong fibres. It also wicks away moisture ensuring that hi vis workwear is quick drying, which is particularly useful when working outdoors or in warmer temperatures.

The really unique part of high visibility clothing is the retroreflective strips used to make hi vis clothes compliant with ISO standards. International Organizational Standards for high visibility clothing require that for hi vis articles to be PPE compliant in the UK they must have a certain amount of coverage of reflective and fluorescent material. (See our blog on ‘what is hi vis’ for more information on this.)

What are the Reflective Strips Made From?

The reflective strips on hi vis PPE are made from either micro-prismatic tape or glass bead reflective tape. These strips are designed to reflect the light back in multiple directions and are technically retroreflective rather than reflective, which is when light is reflected back from the direction it came from.
Micro prismatic tape is an adhesive tape that’s surface is covered entirely by micro-engineered 3-point prisms.

This clever design means that most of the light shining on the retroreflective tape is returned making the strips on hi vis clothing essential for keeping the wearing as visible as possible in a wide variety of light levels.

The alternative to micro prismatic tape is glass bead reflective tape. Whilst this is still an acceptable form of retroreflective tape, the shape of the glass beads does not reflect as much light back as the triple pointed structure of the prism.

How Long Does Hi Vis Clothing Last?

Typically, synthetic fibres are more durable than natural materials however the impact of producing them is more detrimental to the environment as they are made from petrochemicals.

The material used to make hi vis t-shirts, hi vis polos and other hi vis garments is most often synthetic due to the thermal properties of manmade fibres. The benefit of this is that hi vis clothing does tend to be fairly durable and will last a minimum of several years even when worn frequently.

The retroreflective part of hi vis clothes, the reflective tape, is the part that will degrade more quickly than the fibres. It is recommended that hi vis clothing is replaced every 5 years or so to maintain the high functionality of the reflective properties.

Wear and tear will cause some of the prisms or glass beads to detach making the surface of the tape less reflective over time.

Minimum Requirements of Hi Vis Clothing

In the UK, regulation ISO 20471:2013 is the name of the high visibility clothing standard that safe hi vis should conform to. There are different classifications of hi vis apparel and it is the responsibility of the business to make sure that the correct hi vis PPE is worn under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.
